Not a diagnosis. This explains common causes so you can ask better questions. A technician who inspects your car is the only one who can diagnose it.
What you're noticing
- A shop quoted you a brake job and you are not sure if the price is fair.
- You hear squealing or grinding, or the shop said your pads are "low".
Likely causes (most to least likely)
- Pads only. The most common brake job. Pads wear out first.
- Pads and rotors. Rotors need replacing when they are below the minimum thickness or badly damaged. This roughly doubles the bill, so ask for the measurement.
- Calipers or brake lines. Only needed if they are sticking, leaking or damaged. Not routine with every pad job.
Safe to drive?
Worn brakes are a safety issue. Do not put it off for long.
- Stop driving and get a tow if the pedal is soft or sinks, the red BRAKE light is on, or the car pulls hard when braking.
- Grinding means you may already be damaging rotors. See our grinding guide.

Questions to ask
- Is this quote per axle or for the whole car?
- What are the measured pad thickness and rotor thickness, and the rotor minimum?
- What brand and grade of pads and rotors are you using?
- Is there a warranty on parts and labor?
- Does the price include tax, shop supplies and disposal fees?
Upsells to question
- "Lifetime" pads that cost much more. Ask what the warranty actually covers (often parts only, not labor).
- Brake fluid flush every visit. Check your owner's manual schedule.
- New calipers on every wheel without a clear reason.

- Please quote pads and rotors separately, per axle, in writing.
- Show me the pad and rotor measurements.
- Only replace rotors if they are below minimum thickness or damaged.
- Call me before doing anything else. Please return my old parts.
