〰️ Car shakes at highway speed

Steering wheel or seat shakes around 50–70 mph. Jump to the card to show your mechanic ↓

Not a diagnosis. This explains common causes so you can ask better questions. A technician who inspects your car is the only one who can diagnose it.

What you're noticing

Likely causes (most to least likely)

  1. Tires out of balance. The most common cause. A lost wheel weight or new tires that need balancing. RepairPal says if vibration appears at certain speeds or grows with speed, tires get balanced first.
  2. A damaged tire or bent wheel. A pothole can bend a wheel or damage a tire. Look for a bulge or bubble on the sidewall.
  3. Worn suspension or steering parts. Worn tie rods, ball joints or wheel bearings can cause shaking, sometimes with clunks or humming.
  4. Alignment. Alignment usually causes pulling and uneven tire wear more than shaking. It is often sold for a shake it will not fix.

Safe to drive?

Usually OK to drive gently to a tire shop. Stop if it is getting worse.

  • Pull over and check your tires if the shaking is sudden or severe. A bulge on a tire sidewall means do not drive on it. Use the spare or call for help.
  • Stop and call for a tow if you hear clunking, the steering feels loose, or the car wanders. A loose wheel or failing joint is dangerous.
  • Slow down until it is checked. Avoid the speed where it shakes.

Re: Car shakes at highway speed. Only do this:

  1. My car shakes at about ___ mph, in the [steering wheel / seat].
  2. Please check balance, tires and wheels first, and test-drive at that speed.
  3. Written estimate before anything beyond balancing.
  4. Show me any damaged part before replacing it.
